Atypicaltales

Cosplaying to me is a form of self expression and ultimately a labour of love to the character and show you are cosplaying. I started learning to sew in 2020 and knew I wanted to use this skill to cosplay. I spent many nights and days unpicking stitches but I always told myself that it’s okay to make mistakes. My first few cosplays were far from perfect in my eyes but where met with so much positivity from the cosplay community online and at conventions.

One cosplay I made that I’m incredibly proud of is my Beetlejuice cosplay inspired by the Broadway musical. I had never made a suit jacket and pants from scratch before but I knew I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone for my craft.

Cosplay makes me feel confident, whether I’m dressed as Ahri from League of Legends or as Lazlo from What We Do in the Shadows. I feel so proud when I’m in a cosplay I made and when I can show it to other people. I have made so many lovely friends from meeting fellow cosplayers at conventions; they have taught many me tips and tricks and I adore seeing them in their element as well. I love seeing other cosplayers celebrate their own triumphs, whether it’s doing their first ever cosplay or completing and cosplay that took 3 years.
My cosplay journey is far from done but it’s amazing to look back and see all of the skills I’ve learnt and cosplays I’ve create since I started. I’m proud of my progress and incredibly excited to see what the next year of cosplaying holds.
