Adam Nichols is an award-winning Australian Concept Designer and Art Director with over two decades of industry experience. He has driven creative innovation in leadership roles at companies such as Krome Studios, Halfbrick, The Binary Mill, and Croomo. In 2016, Adam founded SkullStar Studios, specializing in concept design, illustration, art direction, branding, and UX/UI for the entertainment and video game industries.
Throughout his career, Adam has left his creative imprint on some of today’s most iconic pop culture franchises. His portfolio includes contributions to blockbuster titles like Star Wars (The Force Unleashed), Harry Potter (Hogwarts Legacy), Hellboy (The Science of Evil), Fruit Ninja (franchise), Clonewars (The Republic Heroes), and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (franchise). His signature style has also enriched major licenses such as Ghostbusters, Warhammer, Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, Mercedes Benz, Call of Cthulhu, Jetpack Joyride, Blade Kitten 1 & 2, and Gun Club (franchise), among many others.
Notably, he played a key role in creating the award-winning Mini Motor Racing franchise — the winner of Apple App Store’s Casual Game of the Year – and was recently the runner-up for an Australian Game Developer Award (AGDA) for Excellence in Mobile as Art Director of Words Collide in 2023.
He has worked with many of the largest global gaming heavyweights such as Lucasarts, Warner Bros., Konami, EA, Activision, Microsoft, and Atari.
In addition to his design work, Adam founded Nichols Publishing in 2014, releasing his debut book, The Art of Adam Nichols Vol. 1: Concept Design and Illustration. He followed this with the popular theory handbook Understanding Colour in 2016 – an essential resource for both aspiring and professional artists — with a companion volume on Understanding Composition underway.
Adam’s work extends beyond video games. His illustrations have featured in initiatives such as the Queensland Government’s PrepL online learners driver course and in designing iconic signage for Mondelez and featured at Cadbury’s Ringwood factory. His diverse client list includes Cricket Australia, Aurizon, Penny Arcade, Titan Books, Beyond Blue, Red5 Comics, 88MPH Comics, Convict Comics, Qube, Ventia, Loaded Dice Games and DMC Projects.
A dynamic creative force, Adam is also one half of the Nichols Brothers alongside his older brother, Wayne Nichols — a renowned international comic artist, illustrator and musician.
Adam looks forward to connecting with fans and industry peers alike. At his upcoming event, discover his latest books, artwork, and exclusive opportunities for sketches and private commissions — all available with complimentary signatures.
